I was painting while she was playing behind me. I asked her if she wanted to paint too. I gave her the disney princess painting book. While she was painting I asked her a question but she did not answer.

Me: busy mo dyan ah
Iya: ikaw din kaya busy kanina
Me: Ako? Hindi ah
Iya: Kanina nga tinatanong kita kung ano favorite animal mo hindi ka sumasagot. Isa pang hindi mo ako pansinin magtatampo na talaga ko sayo.

We bought my favorite cupcakes from podium. I was teasing her that I’ll get her share..
Me: ang sarap ng red velvet!
Iya: nanay wag mo galawin yan sa akin yan. May red velvet ka sa ref mas malaki. Di ba mas masarap ang malaki?
Me: mas maganda kaya ang mas maliit mas cute.

Iya: hindi mas maganda ang malaki kasi malaki ka. Yung maliit sa akin kasi maliit ako.

One night while we were about to sleep I asked her questions to check if she knows her Filipino.

Me: bakit kanina tinatanong kita hindi ka marunong magbilang? Makinig ka sa teacher mo ha. Magaaral tayo ng filipino. Kailangan marunong ka non kasi filipino ka.
Iya: opo
Me: ano ang tagalog ng circle?
Iya: bilog
Me: ano ang parisukat?
Iya: di ko alam eh nanay.
Me: square! Kasi parepareho sukat di ba?
Me: ano ang parihaba?
Iya: parang rectangle kasi mahaba. Nanay tanungin mo ko kung ano ang puso?
Me: ah oo nga.. ano ang puso?
Iya: heart. Nanay ano ang star?
Me: ano ng ba? ano ang bituin?
Iya: Diamond?
Me: hindi. Bituin sa langit..
Iya: star!
Me: e ano ang diamond?
Iya: nanay tama na yang tanong 11 na tulog na tayo.

Actually I don’t really know what the tagalog word for diamond is.

I was singing the song “never grow up” by Taylor Swift and she asked…

Iya: nanay ayaw mo ba ko lumaki?
Me: uhm hindi naman…
Iya: e bakit mo kinakanta yung “oh darling don’t you ever grow up?”
Me: kasi may mga bata na masyadong nagmamadaling tumanda. For example nagsusuot ng pang dalaga na damit. Ayaw ko lang na magmadali ka.
Iya: ah.. tama ka naman dun nanay.
And speaking of never growing up, I was taken aback by her question.  It seems like by asking her to not grow up I was hindering her to mature, develop, and achieve.  It would be a selfish thing to wish for.  But the song only wants to convey that mothers desire nothing else than to protect their children from the problems of adulthood.  We want our children to remain content in the confines of our care where we can control everything.  But I know that getting hurt and solving problems are part of growing up and even if I try to shield her from all these things, I just can’t.
